In some environments there is a need for better corrosion protection of the anchorage due to aggressive environmental elements which a standard anchorage cannot protect against. In an aggressive environment, your engineer or builder may require an "encapsulated" system. An encapsulated system should be specified anytime that a post-tensioned structure is subjected to aggressive elements such as sea water, brackish water, deicing agents, or sprays from any of these sources.
An encapsulated system provides a watertight "encapsulation" of the anchorage system along with any exposed prestressing steel. The anchorage is encased in a plastic sheathing and has a plastic sleeve and seal that covers any exposed prestressing steel. A watertight cap, which seals the wedge cavity, is installed after the tendon has been stressed.
